Twilight Fans - Check out BOOK REVIEW Midnight Sun (Twilight, #5)

Story line: When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, readers can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun.

This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward's past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he justify following his heart if it means leading Bella into danger?

Avid reader Chelsea Gouin gives this book

4 out of 5 stars.

I think Midnight Sun accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do...reignites fans love for the series.

While I think this book was far from perfect, I did turn on the movies again and am itching to reread the core four. It has been many years since I've looked at Twilight so other than the scenes from the movie, I was a little foggy in remembering specifics of the plot. I think that helped, having a fresh set of eyes on the narrative.

Diving into Midnight Sun was honestly like greeting old friends, a reunion I'd never thought I'd have but was pleasant nonetheless. Told through Edward's point of view, we see the angsty vampire's thoughts as Bella Swan moves to Forks, Washington. Edward isn't like other high school boys, he's not attracted to Bella like Mike is...he literally thirsts for her sweet blood that acts as his siren's song. But the Cullens are "vegetarians"; they only drink animal blood. So Edward tries to stay away, wrestles with his humanity, but inevitably falls in love with the human.

While I did enjoy the book overall, I will admit that the middle was a chore to push through. Edward, being a vampire, doesn't ever sleep so every minute of every day is accounted for. Seriously. We watched the story unfold in real time which became taxing to read through at times. There were definitely parts that stood out as original, some insight I don't remember even vaguely from the original text...but I appreciated them for fleshing out the characters even more. Especially enjoyed the origin stories and some other tales of times gone by of the Cullens.

So Twilight fans, I'd definitely recommend this for you. The more casual fans may want to skip it for it's huge page length and ultimately nothing too special in the reveals. I do think teen audiences will connect with the melodrama and enjoy connecting with this unique band of characters again.
