Story line: A high-stakes world of adventure, passion, danger, and betrayal . . . . From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer comes the New York Times-bestselling YA novel Renegades.
Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies--humans with extraordinary abilities--who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice--and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.
Avid reader Chelsea Gouin gives this book
3.5 out of 5 stars.
So, I liked this but I think it dragged on way too long. The concept of a world where super heroes called "Renegades" and villains titled "Anarchists" was a fun read...it just had a weird pacing that took way to long to develop any sort of interesting plot threads. Nova is known as Nightmare with the ability to put those to sleep if she touches them; an Anarchist after the Renegades failed to save her family from being assassinated in front of her as a child, she is a vigilante out for revenge. With the ability to infiltrate the Renegade headquarters as "Insomnia" and keep her identity a secret, Nova begins to realize that both sides have blurred lines of "right" and "wrong" and what they're actually fighting for.
The characters all were delightful, the world a fun one to play in...but the plot was so slow moving that I struggled to get through this 600+ page epic. And it's a trilogy so there's even more things to come. While I am intrigued with the direction this is taking, I'm hoping for a more concise and action-driven story in the upcoming sequels.
